Three top tips for choosing hardwood flooring

Good choice! Nothing adds as much glamour to a room as wood flooring. And it also comes with many benefits, such as real estate value-adding and cost-effectiveness.

It's not just about choosing a color, although that is the fun part. Here are three other things you need to think about.

1. Decide on the type of hardwood

Solid is one thickness throughout. Engineered floors from brands like Bella Cera have construction that makes them more stable and better able to handle water.

The solid and engineered versions look similar on the surface and can be refinished and add real estate value. Engineered, however, can be installed in some higher-than-normal humid areas.

2. Think about species

Be sure to look at samples at the hardwood flooring company. You'll undoubtedly have many choices.

Woods are either domestic or exotic. Each type has a distinctive look.

Domestics, harvested within North America, are more traditional and warmer. Examples would be oak, hickory, birch, maple, etc.

Exotics are harvested in Brazil, Indonesia, Southeast Asia, Africa, etc. They are darker, more dramatic, and, some say, more contemporary. An example would be the flaming red Brazilian cherry.

3. What's your style?

Decide on your engineered or solid hardwood flooring's color, grain pattern, and plank width. When selecting a color, think about your home's overall decor.

Nothing needs to be an exact match, but they should harmonize. You want a cohesive look, not a confusing mish-mash.

Logs are cut three ways, each with a distinctive grain pattern. There's plain-sawn, rift-sawn, and quarter-sawn.

Currently, wider planks are trending. They can make a room seem larger and airier or small and cluttered.
